“Becoming a Wyoming Scholar will provide further opportunities for our
young people to access higher education or get a better start on a
fulfilling career. This program really throws the door open for more
college aid and more career options.” Dr. Jim McBride, State Superintendent of Public Instruction September 27, 2007 |
State Scholars Initiative
The Wyoming State Scholars Initiative motivates students to complete a challenging curriculum of high school courses that prepares them for success in college and careers.
The initiative brings local business leaders into the classroom to promote completion of the Wyoming Scholars course of study and discuss the future benefits of taking more rigorous classes throughout high school.
Students who become Wyoming Scholars are guided through a defined, rigorous curriculum including course requirements in English, math, science, social studies (chosen from U.S. History, World History, Geography, Economics, or Government), and foreign language. The course of study extends beyond the state's current requirements, while leaving ample time for elective classes.
To become a Wyoming Scholar, students must take the following courses:
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of math including Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry
- 3 years of lab-based natural science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
- 3.5 years of social science (chosen from U.S. History, World History, Geography, Economics, or Government)
- 2 years of a foreign language (other than English)
